An Update On AI Bill Of Rights

One year after the White House released its Blueprint for an AI Bill of Rights, President Biden released an Executive Order on the Safe, Secure, and Trustworthy Development and Use of Artificial Intelligence.

While the AI Bill of Rights identified five principles “that should guide the design, use, and deployment of automated systems to protect the American public in the age of artificial intelligence,” it lacked any enforcement mechanisms. The Executive Order (EO), however, calls for a Federal-government-wide approach to governing the development of safe and responsible AI.

The eight guiding principles and priorities creating the EO framework reflect many values that TechShift upholds. One such principle is advancing equity and civil rights protection. Acknowledging that algorithms can exacerbate existing biases, the EO includes additional actions such as providing clear guidelines for landlords, federal benefits programs, and federal contractors to keep AI algorithms from exacerbating discrimination and ensuring fairness in the criminal justice system among other positive changes. For those in school and the workforce, the EO documents ways AI can support educators and protect workers from AI-produced labor disruptions.

TechShift Alliance is encouraged by the EO and we look forward to the continued implementation of responsible and equitable technologies.
